The Winter season is filled with memories, traditions, heritage, and folklore. The celebrations and happenings throughout this season have a way of stirring up things that have long since passed. Positive or otherwise.

This season is one of joy and gratitude and it is also often a season of grief and loneliness.

(Yet another way Winter brings us the wisdom of contrast, just as there is snow in the darkest season.)

A bit of a disclaimer: The topic of grief and loneliness is one that cannot be adequately explored in such a short space here. It is also an area where herbal allies chosen specifically for your unique person and experiences (within an herbal consultation) is far superior to a general suggestion or recommendation.

However, this season is one that tugs at the heart in a way many other seasons don’t and I would like to offer a few herbs that you may wish to call on and incorporate into these dark Winter days if you are feeling the tug a little stronger.

Linden flowers in bloom

Hawthorne: grief, heaviness in the heart, and/or anxieties

Linden: grief, nervous system and heart support, brings softness

Lemon Balm: “a bit of sunshine” in a cup, nervous system support

Motherwort: when you could use some loving Mother energy or hug, supports moving sadness from the heart, supportive of the nervous system

Each of these (with the exception of Motherwort as she is quite bitter) would make a lovely tea. In fact, Hawthorne, Linden, and Lemon Balm sound like a really nice blend.

(*Supporting the nervous system helps us to process experiences and emotions while also supporting us finding a sense of calm/peace.)
